Today, we shine a spotlight on exceptional talent, Mayokun Oyekunle, a 3D product designer, developer, and animator based in Ibadan, Nigeria, who has made significant contributions to the African XR Community, Starting as the Blender instructor for the African XR Community’s 3D skill up Initiative Weekend Code. To become a Devout contributor to the growth of the community and its members With a passion for creativity and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, this visionary talent has carved a unique path in the XR landscape, inspiring others to follow suit.  

In February He championed the Course for the commencement of the #100 days of Unity Challenge, with the vision of helping to spur the passion of community members to embrace 3D development with Unity Engine, One of the most widely used 3D development software. Mayo’s story is a tale of passion, resilience, and the desire to succeed against the odds.

Q: How did your journey into XR development begin?

 My journey into XR development began seven years ago when I discovered a 3D animation software called ‘Blender.’ I was immediately intrigued by the limitless possibilities of virtual creation, and I embarked on a relentless quest to master the art of 3D modeling and design. This marked the beginning of my fascination with virtual reality and the exploration of the African XR Community.

Q: Could you tell us about your proudest project in the XR field?

 One project that stands out as a source of pride and accomplishment for me is the ‘Weekend Code.’ As a Blender instructor, I had the opportunity to share my knowledge and expertise with others. Through this initiative, I ignited the spark of curiosity in budding XR enthusiasts, empowering them to embark on their creative journeys.

Q: What challenges did you face along the way and how did you overcome them?

Like any journey, mine wasn’t without its challenges. One of the initial obstacles I encountered was the limited equipment at my disposal. I had to work with a laptop that required laundry pegs to keep the screen upright, which was quite comical. However, these limitations never deterred my drive and determination to progress. My passion and resilience propelled me forward, allowing me to overcome these obstacles and continue my pursuit of XR excellence.

Q: Could you share some of the milestones you have achieved in the XR field?

 While still on my XR exploration journey, I have already achieved several significant milestones. One notable accomplishment was taking on the 100 Days of Unity Challenge. This challenge was a testament to my commitment to continuous growth within the XR realm. It pushed me to hone my skills and push the boundaries of what is possible.

Q: What advice would you offer to fellow XR adventurers?

 My advice to fellow XR adventurers is simple: “JUST START.” Waiting for the perfect moment will only delay the realization of your dreams. The time to embark on your XR journey is now. Let your passion be the driving force that helps you overcome any obstacles that may arise along the way.

Q: What exciting initiatives do you have on the horizon?

 I am eagerly looking forward to community hangouts, meet and greets, and project hackathons. These initiatives foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the collective pursuit of innovative XR solutions. By actively engaging in these events, I aim to contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the African XR community.

Q: How has the African XR community impacted your journey?

The African XR community has had a profound impact on my journey. It has provided me with motivation, support, and numerous learning opportunities. Through various initiatives, my peers and facilitators have inspired me to learn, improve, and unlock my creative potential. This year, I believe the African XR community will reshape the realities of its members, fostering a thriving ecosystem of XR innovation and collaboration.

Q: Are there any digital icons or sources of creative inspiration that influence your work?

 One digital icon who greatly inspires me is Elon Musk. His relentless pursuit of innovation and his impact across various industries fuel my creative fires. Musk’s ability to push boundaries and explore new frontiers resonates with my aspirations within the XR space.
